AIPA SURFBOARDS

Aipa The Dark Twinn Surfboard - Fusion Core

Aipa started surfing at a young age and quickly became known for his skill and style in the water. In the early 1960s, he began shaping surfboards for himself and his friends, and his reputation as a skilled shaper quickly spread.

In 1966, Aipa opened his own surf shop in Pearl City, Hawaii, where he began shaping boards for a wider audience. Aipa's surfboards were known for their innovative designs and high performance, and he quickly gained a following among professional surfers and surfing enthusiasts.

Aipa's most famous design is the "sting" surfboard, which he developed in the early 1970s. The sting featured a unique double-winged tail design that allowed surfers to make tighter turns and ride faster waves. The sting became one of the most popular surfboard designs of the era, and it is still highly regarded by surfers today.

Throughout his career, Aipa continued to innovate and experiment with new surfboard designs. He worked with some of the best surfers in the world, including Mark Richards and Sunny Garcia, to create custom boards that were perfectly suited to their individual styles.

Today, Aipa is regarded as one of the greatest surfboard shapers of all time, and his influence can be seen in the designs of many of the top surfboard brands in the world. His legacy continues through his son, Akila Aipa, who is also a highly regarded surfboard shaper and has continued to develop new designs and techniques inspired by his father's work.

ABOUT THE BOARD:

The Dark Twinn was developed as part of Aipa’s Dark Series, a series of new designs inspired by Ben Aipa’s classic shapes and modernized for futuristic surfing.

The Dark Twinn combines Ben’s Wing Twin template, used to make Dane Kealoha’s twins in the late ‘70s and ‘90s, with an updated Swing Twin Squash template for a modern feel. The shift in wing placements engages the wing-to-fin relationship and accents how the board performs as a twin fin. Featuring, Mid-range rockers, and a lowered rail apex line, the Dark Twinn is a high-performance groveler built for aggressive surfing in soft waves. A staged bottom contour with a blended roll from the nose down into a single concave under the forward foot transitions into a double concave that is deepest between the forward fins.

The concave then blends with a healthy amount of vee/double-concave, starting at the wing, and easing through the tail. The Dark Twinn is a lively and responsive board proven from Pismo Beach mush to juicy Hawaiian surf.

This Dark Twin is fitted with Surftech's Fusion core - EPS construction for the centre of the board for paddle power and durability. PU on the rails to get the same feel of a full fiberglass board. FCS 2 X 3 fin boxes so you can use this board as a straight twin, or a twin with a trailer fin for a little bit more control when the waves are larger. We recommend the FCS 2 Mark Richards set that comes with a trailer fin, The Al Merrick or Glen Pang - also from FCS.
